Understanding the house edge concept in European roulette
European roulette is a game played with 37 numbers on the wheel. The dealer spins this wheel and drops a ball on it: Players try to predict where the ball will stop. It is possible to place a bet on a single number, a range of numbers, a color (red/black), or even the type of outcome (odd or even). As can be guessed, each of these betting options has a different probability and payout.

European roulette probability and odds: What is the difference?
To understand odds on European roulette, you need to learn the difference between odds, probabilities, and payouts: These are all different concepts. Below, we explain them in detail.
European roulette probability
This means how likely an outcome is to happen. In layman’s terms, it is the “winning chance”. It is shown with percentages and calculated by dividing the targeted outcome by the number of all outcomes.
European roulette odds
European roulette odds are the values that indicate the probability of an outcome happening and not happening. In practice, it shows the same thing: How likely it is for an outcome to happen. Odds are shown with a pair of numbers, not percentages.
European roulette payout
This means how much you can win for a specific bet type. It is shown as “x:1”. The “x” here shows the actual payout and the “1” shows the bet amount. For example, “2:1” means that for every 1 unit you bet, you will win 2 units.
Please note that these explanations (and formulas) are for the classic version of European roulette: If you are playing a different variant (i.e. European Roulette Gold or Triple Zero Roulette), they will be different.
European roulette odds table & European roulette payout chart
Based on where they are placed on the European roulette table, there are two types of bets in this game: inside and outside. However, this distinction also determines how many numbers are included in your bet. In general, we can say that:
- Inside bets offer bigger payouts but smaller odds: You bet on fewer numbers.
- Outside bets offer smaller payouts but bigger odds: You bet on more numbers.
To save you the trouble, here is the full list of inside and outside bets in European roulette:
Inside bets: Single, Split, Street, Corner, Line
Outside bets: Dozen, Column, Low, High, Red, Black, Odd, Even
So, what is the difference between these two when it comes to odds and probabilities? The European roulette odds chart below will answer this question. It is also a European roulette payout table, so you can find out how much you can win for each bet type. By applying the formulas explained above we will have:

European roulette rules and odds for the French variant
We explained the basic European roulette rules and odds/probabilities above, and mentioned that how it is superior to the American variant. In a comparison like European vs American roulette odds, the European variant is always good – that’s for sure. However, there is one more variant that offers even better odds than European roulette: French roulette.
The French variant of this popular table game has the same wheel and payouts as European roulette. However, it offers additional betting rules and due to these rules, the house edge goes as low as 1.30%. Note that this is not a general decrease: The odds/probabilities of inside and outside bets are still the same. But the additional betting rules are so good, they decrease the overall house edge too. Based on which additional roulette rules are offered, there are two types of French roulette:
- La Partage: The house edge is 1.30%. If the ball stops at zero, all bets that pay 1:1 (low/high, odd/even, red/black) pay half of the initial wager back. So even if you lose, you still get a payout.
- En Prison: The house edge is 1.35%. The dealer puts a marker on all bets that pay 1:1 before making the spin. If the ball stops at zero, you don’t lose: You just get to make another spin, which means you literally repeat the bet. If you still lose the next spin, you get half of the initial wager back.

Tip
👉 In general, you should stick with outside bets. Specifically, you should prefer low/high, odd/even, and red/black bets.
👉 In layman’s terms, the odds of hitting red European roulette, for example, is 1 in 2.06, which equals a probability of 48.64%. European roulette single number odds, on the other hand, are just 36 to 1 (2.70%).
👉 The difference is clear: Roulette outside bets are your best “bet”.
